As the Biden Administration enters its second year, the United States-India Relationship Council (USIRC) expresses its concern over the unfilled post for United States ambassador to India. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was selected for the position. However, Garcetti’s nomination looks increasingly embattled as misconduct allegations relating to a close aide mount.
There could be no worse time to play political brinkmanship over the office of US ambassador to India. At a time when nuclear-armed Pakistan is in political turmoil, Sri Lanka is in unprecedented economic tailspin, and Afghanistan has succumbed to the barbarism of the Taliban, the US urgently needs an envoy to India, a bulwark for regional stability and the world’s largest democracy.
USIRC calls for a speedy nomination and confirmation process for the next US Ambassador to India. If Mayor Garcetti lacks sufficient political support in the US Senate, then it is imperative that he withdraw from further consideration and an expedited vetting is given to a new candidate. The US-India relationship deserves better.
